Background
This year Smart Commute Month took place from September 1st to September 29th across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Smart Commute Month is an annual campaign that celebrates all modes of transportation: cycling, carpooling, public transit and walking. This year’s activities included webinars, public outreach events, and regional surveys and contests.
The Opportunity
pointA viewed Smart Commute Month 2023 as an opportunity to re-engage with worksites as many employees return to the office after the summer and remote work. pointA tailored activities to be both in person and virtual to maximize attendance and impact.
How pointA helped
pointA delivers the Smart Commute program in North Toronto and Vaughan. To support Smart Commute workplaces and employees throughout Smart Commute Month, pointA hosted several outreach events and hosted a webinar on the benefits of carpooling. During these outreaches, pointA promoted public transit, carpooling, cycling and walking by providing free resources such as: TTC, Brampton Transit and York Region Transit Ride Guides; Toronto and York Region Cycling Maps; Cycling Skills and Safety Booklets; and York Region Trail Guides. Having a wide range of resources allowed us to reach more attendees. Additionally, pointA distributed prizes to participants who attended our Smart Commute Month webinar and the York Region and the City of Toronto surveys. Attendees were also encouraged to take part in Smart Commute Month by logging their daily commutes.

Overall, the 2023 Smart Commute Month is considered a success since we were able to reach a wider audience and increase our engagement impact. As a result, pointA will continue to couple in person outreaches with virtual learning opportunities. Connecting with clients using different activities allowed us to enrich the Smart Commute Month campaign.
