About Us

pointA is a non-profit that envisions sustainable transportation options for everyone. Our goal is to connect people to the places they want to go. We aim to give people and businesses transportation options that benefit the environment, the economy, and the well-being of our communities. In collaboration with our funders, partners, and clients, we facilitate transportation demand management (TDM) programs to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles on the road and to encourage commuters to try more sustainable modes of transportation such as cycling, walking, and public transportation.  

Our core activities include developing, launching, and monitoring TDM programs for medium- to large- sized organizations primarily through the Smart Commute, Best Workplaces for Commuters, and shuttle programs. We promote a menu of options for commuters, such as transit, ride-matching, shuttle buses, vanpooling, telecommuting, cycling, and walking.

pointA (www.pointa.ca) is a federally incorporated not-for-profit organization that envisions sustainable transportation options for everyone. Our goal is to connect people to the places they want to go. We aim to give people and businesses transportation options that benefit the environment, the economy and the well-being of our communities. In collaboration with our funders, members and partners, we facilitate transportation demand management programs and advocate for sustainable transportation.

Our main programs are: the Smart Commute program, Best Workplaces for Commuters, and shuttle services. Based in Toronto, Ontario, it is growing nationally across Canada.

We currently have 8 directors on our Board, with three standing subcommittees: Audit & Finance, the Executive Committee, and the Governance & Nominations Committee.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking up to 9 volunteers for the following positions:   

  • 1 general director, who will join our 8-member board of directors. 
  • Up to 8 advisors, who will join our newly established advisory body.   
     

We are seeking individuals with the following skills and experience:  

  • Grants and sponsorships  
  • Media relations – 1 position available (director or advisor) 
  • Legal counsel – 1 position available (director or advisor) 
  • National expansion business development and/or business model development – 1 position for Atlantic Region of Canada, BC, and Prairies each.  
  • Sustainability/emissions reporting with knowledge on GHG Protocol and/or ISO 14064 
     

Candidates should have a strong interest in sustainable transportation. Preference will be given to individuals who have experience serving on a not-for-profit board of directors, who have other strong governance and not-for-profit experience, experience with national expansion, and/or have experience working in British Columbia, the Atlantic Region of Canada, and/or the Prairies. 

Please note that this is a volunteer, unpaid opportunity.

Commitment

Directors: Directors are elected for a three-year term and may be elected for one additional three-year term (a maximum of six years). We have an active board and all directors are expected to sit on at least one committee. On average, directors spend 3-5 hours a month on board matters. Time commitments are as follows: 

  • Quarterly 1.5-hour daytime board meetings on the first or second Wednesday of the month in February, May, September (also includes AGM), and November.  
  • Quarterly 1-1.5-hour daytime committee meetings (except for the Executive Committee, which meets 6 times a year, typically on Thursday afternoons)  
  • Time spent reviewing meeting materials in advance of meetings (~2-4 hours quarterly) 
  • Ad hoc board and committee tasks from time to time 

All meetings are held virtually; however, the Board may meet in-person from time to time.  

Advisors:  

  • Term: Advisors are elected by the board of directors for two-year terms and may be elected for two additional two-year terms (a maximum of 6 years).  
  • Time commitment: We expect that our advisors will spend between 8-15 hours annually supporting the board and the pointA staff.  
  • At the board’s discretion, advisors may be invited to board and/or committee meetings.  
  • Meetings are typically 1-1 virtual engagements with the pointA team.  
  • Recognition: Advisors are posted on the pointA website.  

Application Process

  • Application: Please email a CV and a letter of interest addressed to Ann Lockhart, Board Chair, together with your resume to board@pointa.ca by Sunday, January 4, 2026. Please indicate if you are applying for an advisor or director position. Applicants can also apply for both. Any questions can also be directed to this email address.  
  • Interview: Selected candidates will be invited to a virtual, one-hour interview with the G&N Committee and other members of the Board the week of January 11, 2026. 
  • Second interview may occur at the discretion of the Executive Committee. Reference and background checks are conducted after this time between January 19 and 30, 2026.  
  • Approval: Selected director candidates are required to attend the members meeting on February 11, 2026 when the directors and members approve selected directors and advisors.

Summary of Position 

We are looking for strong cyclists who can support us at outreach events during Bike Month (May and June) 2026 that will take place in Vaughan, Toronto, and Halton Region.  

Cyclists will participate and/or lead group rides and if needed, support the pointA team at tablings.  

This is a great opportunity to support local efforts for cleaner, greener transportation while building valuable connections and learning more about sustainability. 

We Are Looking For 

We’re seeking enthusiastic volunteers who are passionate about sustainability and making a positive impact in the community. The ideal candidate will have: 

  • Cycling Knowledge: We require you to have the following: (1) own your own bicycle, (2) know how to bicycle, (3) able to obey traffic laws. 
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: Ability to comfortably engage with community members and communicate ideas clearly and positively. 
  • Passion for Sustainable Transportation: An interest in or knowledge of active and sustainable transportation options and their benefits. 
  • Community Focus: Eagerness to connect with diverse communities in North Toronto, Scarborough, Etobicoke, Vaughan, and Halton Municipalities (Burlington, Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills). 
  • Team Player: Willingness to collaborate with pointA team members at events and support outreach efforts. 
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to work in a variety of settings, from community events to outdoor festivals, and to adapt to different roles.  

Time Commitment: Our events and outreaches typically range from 2-6 hours not including set up, tear down, and transportation time.
