The Results
As of 2023, The City of Toronto is proud to be recognized as Canada’s first “Best Workplace for Commuters” and has been awarded the Best Workplaces for Commuters designation. This designation applies to 16 of the city’s largest office workplaces, reaching more than 16,000 employees. The program offers various commuter support initiatives, including:
- A hybrid work model allowing employees to work remotely (2-3 days per week);
- The use of city fleet vehicles for operational needs;
- Membership in the Smart Commute program. This program encompasses services such as an emergency ride-home program, an online carpool ride-matching tool, and campaigns and workshops.
The decision to join Best Workplaces for Commuters aligns with the City of Toronto’s sustainability, inclusivity, and accessibility goals. By showcasing its commitment to these areas, Toronto aims to be an example for other municipalities and employers and encourage meaningful steps toward sustainability and inclusion.
Toronto’s unwavering commitment to sustainability has garnered recognition, and the city has received the Environmental, Climate, and Energy Award at the 9th annual American Planning Association Awards for Excellence in Sustainability. This accolade is in acknowledgment of Toronto’s TransformTO Net Zero Strategy, which aims to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2040.
With the Best Workplaces for Commuters designation, Toronto continues its dedication to be a leader in sustainability, setting an example for other municipalities and employers, and demonstrating a progressive approach to creating a city for future generations.
“The City of Toronto is proud to be recognized as the first municipality and workplace in Canada to achieve the designation of Best Workplace for Commuters.
