Background
The City of Vaughan is a longstanding client and stakeholder in the Smart Commute program, and pointA has developed a strong partnership with the City, collaborating on various initiatives to promote sustainable transportation, including carpooling and active transportation programs. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to making transportation more accessible, efficient, and environmentally friendly.
The City of Vaughan’s annual Canada Day celebration, held at Boyd Conservation Park, is a much-anticipated event that draws thousands of attendees each year. The festivities feature incredible stage entertainment, activities for all ages, a vibrant food zone, a bustling marketplace with vendor booths, and much more. The event’s popularity brings challenges, particularly related to traffic congestion and limited parking at the event site.
Our Intervention
This year, the City wanted to address these challenges head-on by prioritizing sustainable travel options for the event. They turned to pointA to develop a tailored travel plan to help attendees reach the event easily, affordably, and sustainably.
To address the objectives and challenges of the project, pointA began by identifying and evaluating the most suitable and sustainable travel options for attendees of the City of Vaughan’s Canada Day celebration. The team conducted a detailed analysis of the available modes of transportation and made tailored recommendations that aligned with the event’s goals of reducing traffic congestion and enhancing accessibility.
A central component of the travel plan was the creation of a comprehensive, easy-to-understand map. This map outlined the best travel options to the event site, providing clear and actionable information for attendees. The featured options included:
- Public Transportation: Detailed information on transit connections, routes, and schedules to help attendees plan their trips effectively.
- Walking Routes: Highlighted optimal walking paths for those who preferred an active commute to the event, allowing them to enjoy some exercise on their way.
- Cycling Options: Suggested safe and convenient bike routes for environmentally conscious attendees choosing to cycle.
- Shuttle Service: A special shuttle service was implemented exclusively for the event day, offering a convenient and affordable alternative to driving.
One of the primary challenges was ensuring that this valuable information reached both residents and visitors in a timely and accessible manner. To address this, pointA recommended leveraging the City’s website and social media channels as the most effective platforms for communication. These channels were ideal for disseminating the travel map and related details, maximizing outreach and engagement.

The Impact
The Canada Celebration in Vaughan welcomed over 14 000 people this year and the implementation of the travel plan yielded significant outcomes. The quantitative and qualitative impacts include:
- Increased Website Traffic: The City’s website, which hosted the detailed travel map and information, experienced an increase in visits in the week leading up to the event. This indicates strong public interest and engagement with the provided resources.
- High Social Media Engagement: Posts sharing the event travel plan reached strong engagement, including shares, likes, and comments, amplifying the reach of the campaign.
- Reduced Vehicle Congestion: On the day of the event, the use of alternative travel modes alleviated traffic congestion near the Boyd Conservation Park, enhancing overall traffic flow.
- Sustainable Travel Adoption: A large number of attendees opted for public transit, walking, cycling, or the shuttle service, demonstrating a shift toward sustainable transportation modes.
- Enhanced Attendee Experience: The positive feedback from attendees highlighted the value of the travel plan.
- Community Connection: Promoting sustainable travel options fostered a sense of community responsibility and alignment with the City’s broader sustainability goals.
Event Accessibility: Attendees who might have faced barriers due to parking limitations found the alternative options to be convenient and affordable, contributing to a more inclusive celebration.
The travel plan developed for the City of Vaughan’s Canada Day celebration successfully addressed the challenges of high traffic volumes and limited parking space while promoting sustainable transportation options.
