York University has once again been recognized as a Best University for Commuters (BWC) for 2026, an honour they received in 2024 when they became the first university in Canada to achieve this prestigious designation. Despite the shifting landscape and emerging challenges facing Canadian post-secondary institutions, York University continues to prioritize sustainable commuting for its students, faculty, and staff.
In a time of financial pressures, infrastructure demands, and changing enrollment patterns across the sector, York University remains a model for how colleges and universities can continue to invest in mobility solutions that benefit their community, reduce emissions, and enhance campus accessibility.
A Campus Increasingly Powered by Micro-Mobility
Over the past few years, York University has accelerated its efforts to support micro-mobility, reflecting a noticeable shift in how people travel on and to the campus. With Bike Share Toronto stations located on-site, and the growing trend for e-bikes and e-scooters, micro-mobility has quickly become one of York University’s fastest-growing modes of transportation.
To support this transition, pointA conducted a site assessment to inform a campus-wide micro-mobility strategy. This work identified infrastructure needs and opportunities to expand safe, accessible infrastructure for cyclists and e-mobility users. As part of the strategy document, pointA developed a Micro-Mobility Guide for York University, a valuable resource on safety guidelines and best practices for navigating the campus.
Carpooling: A Growing Solution
As one of the largest university campuses in the country, York University faces significant parking pressures and constraints related to parking permit costs. To help manage these challenges, York University continues to expand their carpooling programs.
With support from pointA through the Smart Commute program, the University has seen year-over-year growth in active carpooling groups. To encourage even more participation, pointA hosted virtual match-and-mingle events to connect commuters with potential carpool partners and help staff explore shared transportation options.
These programs curb single-occupancy trips by offering the campus community cost-effective, eco-friendly, and social ways to commute.
Public Transit: The Backbone of Campus Mobility
Public transit remains the most popular mode of transportation for much of the York University community. With two major transit hubs directly on campus, York University is a leading transit-accessible Canadian institution.
York University also continues to operate its inter-campus shuttle service for students, staff, and faculty—a service crucial to meeting BWC’s national standards. This shuttle facilitates travel between campuses and enhances mobility for those who rely on a combination of transit and active transportation.
Smart Commute Membership
York University’s partnership with Smart Commute is central to its sustainable transit strategy. A key benefit for faculty and staff is the Emergency Ride Home program, which provides a reliable safety net for those opting for alternative transportation.
Smart Commute also supports carpooling initiatives, trip-tracking tools, and commuter engagement campaigns, resources that strengthen York University’s BWC application year after year.

York University’s leadership in sustainable transportation is obvious with the extensive portfolio of commuter amenities and programs, including:
