We strive to connect people to the places they want to go and do so in a way that benefits the community, the economy and the environment. But what does this entail and how do we accomplish this? Most of our services fall under something called TDM, which stands for ‘Transportation Demand Management’.
Transportation demand management programs provide information, encouragement and incentives to get people out of their cars and trying alternative modes of transportation, such as cycling, walking, carpooling, public transit, or teleworking. TDM programs are also about maximizing the use of existing infrastructure by encouraging cycling, walking, carpooling and transit ridership instead of building more roads or parking.
What does this look like in practice?
We work with employers and property managers to deliver programs and services focussed on behaviour change. This might come in the form of providing personalized commute options, offering preloaded PRESTO cards to help staff try transit, or hosting an event to help staff find carpool partners, to name a few of our more recent initiatives.
Why do we need TDM?
As the population of the GTHA continues to grow and climate change becomes an increasingly serious issue, it is no longer feasible for everyone to jump in their own car and drive alone to work. Educating staff on their commute options and providing incentives and encouragement goes a long way towards reducing congestion on the roads and reducing green house gas emissions.
